ILRI seeks to recruit a Research Technician will
perform research activities for the tissue culture and transformation of yam
under supervision. This position will be based at the International
Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), a hosted institution within ILRI.
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works
to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing
countries. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in East,
West and southern Africa and South, Southeast and East Asia.
CGIAR is a global agricultural research partnership for a
food-secure future. Its science is carried out by 15 research centers that are
members of the CGIAR Consortium in collaboration with hundreds of partner
organizations.
Responsibilities
- Routine work on Plant Tissue culture and Genetic transformation
- Assist in developing rapid and robust regeneration systems for D. rotundata and D. alata.
- Validate robust regeneration system with various accessions of D. rotundata and D. alata.
- Assist in establishing efficient regeneration system through somatic embryogenesis.
- Assist in developing Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system for D. rotundata and D. alata.
- Generate and analyse transgenic lines.
- Assist in molecular and glasshouse analysis of transgenic plants.
- Record keeping.
- Any other duties assigned.
Requirements:-
- Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Plant Science or relevant field
- Experience in Plant tissue culture and genetic transformation will be an asset.
- Able to cope with heavy intermittent workloads extending beyond office hours and during weekends
- Very good interpersonal and communication skills.

Terms of Appointment
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at
ILRI’s Nairobi campus. The position is on a 2 year contract with the
possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued
funding.
Job level and salary
This position is in job Grade 2A , with a minimum start
salary of KES 71,479. This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.
