Overall Responsibilities:
Serves as clinical lead in provision of care for pediatric
cancer patients, and training/mentoring of related staff at Butaro Hospital,
and supports cross-sites clinical management of pediatric cancer patients at
Rwinkwavu and Kirehe. Additionally, plays key role in implementation of Butaro
Cancer Center of Excellence, and programmatic areas including documentation and
data quality, policies and curriculum development.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Clinical and Teaching/Mentoring:
- With
input from Boston-based cancer expert team, and IMB NCD Program Director,

Provide direct clinical care for hospitalized
Butaro pediatric oncology patients. This includes rounding daily on
hospitalized cancer patients and leading management of patients
2.
Oversee care of outpatient pediatric oncology
patients seen at Butaro NCD Clinic.
3.
Provide back up consultant support for adult
cancer patients in the Butaro cancer ward and NCD clinic, when Adult Oncology
Program officer (internist) is not available
4.
Provide consultant input to other general
practitioners on the management of patients with cancer or who are suspected to
have cancer in other Butaro hospital wards/departments
5.
Provide consultative support for management of
inpatient and outpatient pediatric cancer patients at Rwinkwavu
6.
Serve as lead accepting physician for cancer
patients being referred to Rwinkwavu or Butaro from non-PIH supported
facilities (secondary contact for this role being Adult Program Officer)
7.
Provide CME training and mentoring to cancer-related
personnel at Butaro
2. Administrative/Programmatic
- Assist
with general administration and NCD/Cancer program operations, including:
1.
Contribute to the supervision of oncology ward,
working with hospital Medical Director, MOH NCD/cancer doctor coordinator,
Nurse educators, and IMB NCD Director to ensure proper and harmonized (across
sites) functioning of pediatric cancer care and quality assurance initiatives
2.
Oversee to transfer decision making for
pediatric cancer patients to referral facilities in Rwanda and for radiotherapy
to Uganda.
3.
Maintain communication between IMB NCD/ONC
program and Butaro leadership team regarding Cancer Programmatic developments
and leading routine meetings to achieve this.
4.
Serve other cross-sites programmatic roles as
needs arise and as requested by IMB NCD Director

Project manage work developing outpatient cancer
infusion center at Butaro Hospital

Documentation and data quality

Support development of new clinical forms and
periodic revision of them; ensure circulation of current and harmonized
clinical forms across sites

With NCD EMR Program Assistant and IMB NCD
Director and Manager, improve data quality at Butaro
2.
Support transition from patient tracker to full
EMR
2.
Curriculum development
0.
Oversee development of curriculum for pediatric
and general cancer topics, for CME as well as site-based national longitudinal
training programs for doctors
1.
Liaise with DFCI cancer nurse educator; provide
inputs to CME and national longitudinal programs being developed for nurses
- Mentoring
0.
Support Butaro oncology nurse coordinator; e.g.
review oncology online patient tracker at least weekly to ensure that all
pediatric oncology cases, across sites are entered and information is up to
date; be aware of and support coordination of biopsies taken from Butaro
patients with suspected cancer

Mentor Butaro NCD/oncology doctor coordinator at
Butaro; provide bedside teaching, accompany follow up of programmatic issues
- Interface
and collaborate with MOH and national bodies relevant to cancer national
capacity building
3. Meetings
- Attend
the following meetings:
1.
Participate in site-based NCD/Oncology team
check ins, led by MOH NCD/ONC doctor coordinator, which include review of
cancer patients scheduled to be admitted or seen in clinic (weekly)
2.
Participate in clinical oncology calls (weekly)
3.
Participate in multidisciplinary meetings with
District-based MOH and PIH oncology teams, including social work, mental
health, pharmacy and nursing, to discuss and address any clinical, patient
safety or administrative problems that arise (monthly)
4.
Participate in cross-sites NCD Programs meetings
(quarterly), and meetings relevant to programmatic focus areas
5.
Attend KFH-based tumor board meeting (variable,
monthly suggested)
Qualifications:
- Education:
MD with residency training in Pediatrics or Med/Peds is required.
Additional advanced degree in public health, policy, or administration is
highly desired, but not required
- Language:
English fluency required. French and/or Kinyarwanda proficiency are a
plus.
- Highly
motivated to play a leadership role in cancer care at Butaro Hospital, and
at IMB in cross-sites scope
- Understands
and upholds principles of equity and alignment with national priorities in
provision of cancer care in Rwanda
- Highly
organized and able to keep track of multiple administrative and clinical
tasks simultaneously
- Strong
management, communication, mentoring, teaching and leadership skills.
Ability to work well with diverse team and exhibit humility, respect and
team spirit
- Strong
clinical skills and interest in developing knowledge in clinical oncology
