The International Center for Agricultural Research in the
Dry Areas (ICARDA) seeks to recruit a Research Technician-Gender who will be a
member of the IC Ethiopia Country Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
General: The International Center for Agricultural Research
in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is an international autonomous, non-profit, research
organization temporarily based in Beirut, Lebanon supported by the Consultative
Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ICARDA is committed to
the improvement of livelihoods of the resource-poor in dry areas by enhancing
food security and alleviating poverty through agricultural research, and the

Job Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to provide research support to the Gender Team of Livestock and Fish Research Program. Includes literature review, data collection and analysis, synthesizing research findings related to gender and value chains, and writing reports.

Key duties & responsibilities:
- Contributes
to the implementation and reporting of research on gender and livestock
for the Livestock and Fish Research Program,
- Contributes
to the development of approaches and tools to increase participation of
women and youth in the small ruminant value chain and community-based
breeding program,
- Contributes
to the evaluation of the Ethiopia small ruminant benchmarking tool from a
gender perspective and development of the final gendered benchmarking
tool.
- Carries
out field research by utilising a variety of qualitative and quantitative
methods
- Analyses
data using both qualitative and quantitative methods,
- Conducts
literature review focused on gender and agriculture/livestock,
- Analyses
the contribution of the community-based breeding program and other
projects to improving women’s economic and social empowerment including
increasing their access to and control of assets, technologies and services,
- Contributes
to preparation of peer reviewed articles, research reports, briefs and
other communication products including gender checklists and research
materials for website content and publication.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS AND COMPETENCE:
Education
- MSc
in Agricultural or Development Economics, Research Methods, Social
sciences or a related discipline – must have experience in collecting,
analysing and summarizing gender research into publications
Experience
- At
least 2 years of relevant work experience
Skills and Knowledge:
- Familiarity
with gender and livestock system issues and challenges,
- Good
analytical skills and experience of using packages for data analysis
(SPSS, STATA, R, Nvivo or similar),
- Experience
in producing project reports, training manuals and peer-reviewed
publications
- Ability
to work effectively in multi-regional teams and partners with members
drawn from a diverse range of nationalities, cultures and scientific
disciplines,
- Ability
to work under pressure, often to tight deadlines without compromising the
quality of deliverables,
- Ability
to prioritize tasks and to work with little or no supervision,
- Experience
in informal and formal capacity development of colleagues and partners,
- Strong
English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in a second
language),
- Willingness
to travel frequently, often to rural areas in Ethiopia.

Ababa
Level: 2D
Minimum Base: Birr 19,078 (Negotiable,
depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)
Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited
Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is fixed term for one year with the
possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the
availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited

secure, attractive campus on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Dining and
