INTERNAL ADVERT – Animal Technician

ILRI seeks to recruit an Animal Technician to support two projects on vaccine development. One for control of   African swine fever(ASF) funded by BMZ (the German ministry for development assistance) and the other for East coast Fever (ECF) control funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the USAID Feed The Future (FTF) program.


ILRI works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centers working with many partners for a food-secure future. Responsibilities
  • Sampling of pigs that have been vaccinated with defined antigen delivery system expressing African swine fever antigens
  • Sampling of pigs experimentally or naturally infected with African swine fever virus in the laboratory or the field.
  • Sampling of cattle that have been vaccinated with defined delivery systems expressing T. parva antigens.
  • Sampling of cattle that have been challenged with Theileria parva stabilates.
  • Assessing levels of T. parva parasitaemia and parasitosis in experimentally infected or challenged cattle by microscopy
Requirements
  • Diploma in Animal handling and sampling
  • Three years working experience in a research or similar setting
  • Experience in sampling of sera, blood and tissues of pigs and cattle essential
  • Strong English language skills, both written and spoken
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Willingness to travel frequently, often to rural areas within the country.
 Terms of appointment:
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) positions based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is for a 2 years’ contract period.

Job level and salary:
This position is job level 1C with a starting salary of KES45,019per month. In addition to salary, ILRI offers Medical insurance for staff and dependents, Life insurance, Pension at 12.5% employers contribution, Annual holiday entitlement of 30 days+ public holidays within ILRI’s National Recruited Staff Scheme.
