OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
Purpose of the position: To provide expert technical guidance to countries in improving child health status in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Objectives of the programme : To foster national and international efforts to formulate and scale up the implementation of effective, evidence-based policies, strategies, interventions and activities on Child Health and Development, including the Integrated Management of Child Health (IMCI) Strategy, aiming to further reduce mortality and morbidity from major diseases and promote healthy growth and development of children under five years of age. Organizational Context: Under the direct supervision of the Regional Advisor, Child and Adolescent Health (CAH) and the overall guidance of the Director, Health Protection and Promotion (DHP), and based on WHO guidelines on child and adolescent health with specific focus on IMCI (integrated management of child illnesses) the incumbent will: - engage with national counterparts in Member States to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate child health programme with special focus on the millennium development goal (MDG) priority countries; - maintain partnership, with members of maternal and child health team at the Regional Office, counterparts at WHO headquarters and country offices to ensure concerted horizontal planning and implementation of IMCI activities. |

Description of duties:
The incumbent will perform the following duties: - Provide strategic technical advice to Eastern Mediterranean member states on the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of IMCI strategic plans and operational activities in the area of child health. - Coordinate with countries, plan and manage adapting and updating the child-health-related strategies and guidelines. - Build capacity at the regional and country levels for child health programmes, this include (a) assess training needs (b) develop and finalize relevant training manuals, (c) monitor and evaluate implementation of training plans; - Thoroughly review and conduct in-depth child-health-related research at the regional and country levels to assess the activities and services at different levels, and recommend corrective measures. - Advocate for WHO initiatives in child health by preparing and disseminating technical information materials and documents, developing and updating the technical content of CAH/EMRO website. - Coordinate operational research in priority health problems, document key achievements and promote implementation of best practices. |

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
|
|
Education:
Essential: University degree in Medicine and Master's Degree in Public Health and/or Paediatrics. Desirable: Doctorate or equivalent degrees in Public Health and/or Paediatrics. |

Skills:

Functional Skills and Knowledge: - In-depth knowledge of child health programmes. - Advance skills in planning, training and evaluation. - Demonstrated ability to coordinate, implement and evaluate child health programme. - Demonstrated ability to adapt and work effectively with people of different cultures and backgrounds. Other Skills (e.g. IT): Proficiency in MS Office and data management. |

Experience:
Essential: At least 7 years of relevant experience combined at the national and international levels in management of child health programmes. Desirable: Working experience in developing countries and in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating child health activities including IMCI. |

Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English and Arabic. Knowledge of French is an asset. |

Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD 67611 at single rate USD 72605 with primary dependants |
Post Adjustment: 39.4 % of the above
figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations
may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange
rate fluctuations or inflation.
