Deadline:
February 10, 2014
Location:
South Sudan
Organization: IRC
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the
world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their
lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers
lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from
war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, we
restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to
endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home.
BACKGROUND:
More than two decades of fighting in South Sudan
decimated already-meager basic services and systems to protect women and girls
from violence. Six years after the end of the war, reconstruction programs have
been slow to address the human rights of women, and the legacy of conflict has
resulted in a heavily militarized society in which violence is common. Within
this context, IRC South Sudan seeks to address gender-based violence by
supporting service delivery for survivors and technical capacity for partners,
challenging gender inequalities, promoting women’s rights, and contributing to
social, political, and economic environments in which women are safe and
empowered to enjoy these rights.
