ILRI seeks to recruit a Post-doctoral Agro-Economist working
on Gender and Value Chains as an out posted field scientist within its
Livelihood, Gender, Impact and Innovation Program. The position is based in
Hyderabad, India, where ILRI has a small office on the ICRISAT headquarters
campus.
The appointee will implement research on gender and value chains while
supporting local research-for-development partners to undertake gendered
livestock value chains, especially in India, with possible involvement in other
parts of South Asia.
The scientist will report to a senior scientist in ILRI’s
Livelihood, Gender, Impact and Innovation Program. His or her work will
contribute to CRP Policies, Institutions and Markets and to CRP
Livestock and Fish
We are looking for a motivated young scientist with
knowledge of agrifood marketing and experience in designing and implementing
gendered assessment studies. Skills required for this position are a good
understanding of economics applied to value chains within mixed crops and
livestock production and marketing systems in developing countries, and
previous experience in designing, conducting and analysing gendered household
and value chain level surveys.
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works
to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing
countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global research
partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future.
ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in East, West and
southern Africa and South, Southeast and East Asia.

Responsibilities:
- Synthesizing
past research outputs into publications targeting policy makers and
focusing on gendered value chains in India
- Contributing
to the design and implementation of surveys and experimental work to
empower women and other marginalized groups in agricultural value chains
of developing countries, with a particular focus on India
- Contributing
to field site selection for the value chain component of CRP Livestock and
Fish in states such as Bihar, Assam etc.
- Contributing
to value chain assessment and benchmarking surveys in selected Livestock
and Fish sites in India
- Using
the gendered survey and analyses tools developed to evaluate the
sustainability and efficiency of the value chain interventions implemented
by CRP Livestock and Fish and their contribution to empowering women and
other marginalized groups
- Contributing
to strengthening partnerships with research and development organisations
in India and in South Asia.
- Publishing
the results of research in high quality peer-reviewed international
journals
- Contributing
to the development of new research proposals
Requirements:
- PhD in
agricultural economics, agrifood chain marketing or related field
- Experience
in conducting agricultural household and value chain surveys in developing
countries
- Experience
in conducting gendered assessments in the agricultural sector of
developing countries
- Practical
experience in running econometric analysis or other modelling techniques
- Practical
experience in collecting and analysing qualitative data
- Some
experience working or studying in developing countries in Africa, Asia or
Latin America
- Knowledge
of one or more languages used in India will be considered an asset
Position level: 4A, Base salary starting from
USD 40,000 per annum depending on skills and experience, with an attractive
international benefits package.
Post location: The position will be based at
ILRI’s Hyderabad, India,
Duration: 2 years with the possibility of
renewal contingent upon individual performance and
funding.
