The Information Technology department supports the organization’s work by providing reliable and scalable applications and infrastructure for the IRC’s offices in the US and around the world, including many technologically challenging locations.
SCOPE
The Director, Software Systems will provide technical leadership and oversight for all of the IRC’s software development activities. He/she will oversee the team of software professionals who are responsible for developing custom applications and implementing off-the-shelf products, as well as the IT for Programs team working on leveraging technology in our program delivery. He/she will be responsible for delivering high-performing, user-friendly, and scalable applications to this global organization by effectively managing people, process, and budget.  He/she will work closely with the business units to define the products, and manage the process of creating the products. While the primary focus of this role will be on enterprise applications that are managed/implemented by IT, the expectation is that he/she will also provide technical software leadership to other business units (External Relations, International and US Programs) with an eye towards more effective software products globally. He/she will also, where appropriate, leverage systems and approaches across business units for efficiency and economies of scale.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Take overall responsibility for developing business and technical plans for all custom software and integration efforts.
  • Implement best-practice methodologies for software development, and evangelize them within the IT department and throughout the organization.
  • Create a highly functional software team that delivers applications focused on business value
  • Ensure that the team is leveraging optimal architectures that are supportable and scalable.
  • Work closely with the other IT managers on all projects to ensure a smooth handoff from development to production
  • Oversee vendors and consultants as necessary.
  • Prepare annual budgets and project plans for all software projects.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree with 7-10 years’ work experience in professional environment that is technology-enabled, community-oriented, and international.
  • Strong leadership experience with software development processes and methodologies
  • Experience developing business case documentation, technical requirements, and software project plans.
  • Vendor and staff management experience
  • Demonstrated management, business, IT and information skills and the ability to take advantage of the emerging roles in the knowledge economy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with web technologies
  • Experience with Salesforce implementations a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills:  A self-starter attitude and the ability to work independently in fast-paced, detail-oriented environments without losing a sense of humor;
  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills: The ability to effectively motivate and lead a wide variety of people in a multi-cultural environment;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills: ability to successfully and effectively liaise with colleagues on all levels;
  • Solid writing, editing skills, and presentation skills. 
  • Flexible work attitude: the ability to work productively in a team environment and independently;
