Regional Representative, Southern Africa

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Regional Representative, Southern Africa to support research management through coordination of ILRI’s regional programme. The Regional Representative will facilitate ILRI’s involvement in the region by identifying opportunities and developing partnerships with the intention of coordinating activities to ensure better lives through livestock, as well as to contribute towards capacity development.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases. 

ILRI is a not-for-profit institution with a staff of about 700 and in 2014, an operating budget of about USD83 million. A member of the CGIAR Consortium working for a food-secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa and in South, Southeast and East Asia. 

ILRI leads the CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish, leads a component of a CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health on the prevention and control of agriculture-associated diseases, and contributes to six other CGIAR research programs. Staff members work in integrated sciences and biosciences programs that develop and deliver science-based practices, provide scientific evidence for decision-making and develop capacities of livestock-sector stakeholders. With the African Union/New Partnership for Africa’s Development Planning and Coordination Agency, ILRI also hosts and manages the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA)-ILRI Hub.

Responsibilities:
  • Represent ILRI in southern Africa regional fora (e.g. CCARDESA, SADC Secretariat, FANRPAN and others).
  • Provide leadership for the implementation of ILRI’s research and resource mobilization activities in the region.
  • Provide leadership to ensure that ILRI is engaged in developing the livestock agenda in the region with key partners. This involves close liaison with national, sub regional and regional partners, (including other CGIAR centers) and funding agencies.
  • Develop relevant partnerships to support ILRI’s work in the region.
  • Guide ILRI’s communication activities in the region. Share information on southern Africa initiatives with ILRI Management and staff; target and coordinate all communication products.
  • Coordinate ILRI’s capacity development activities in the region.
  • Coordinate some components of the East and Southern Africa Flagship of the CGIAR Research Program on Dry land Systems.
  • Coordinate the ILRI office in Zimbabwe.
  • The post holder will also be expected to contribute 50-75% of their time to specific projects, depending on their area of expertise.
Requirements:
  • An advanced degree in agricultural sciences with a focus in livestock sciences and at least 7-10 years of experience post-PhD.
  • A livestock scientist or livestock development practitioner with a broad range of technical and managerial skills and experience in the agricultural research and development arena, preferably in sub Saharan Africa, and managing diverse projects spanning multi-disciplinary teams, development and government sectors, financial management and investor engagement.
  • Proven skills to lead, motivate and manage teams and to obtain positive results from working in diverse partnerships with national, regional and international institutions in research, extension, development and in public, private and civil society.
  • A good understanding of how national governments and regional bodies work, especially in the southern Africa region.
  • Work experience in the southern Africa region and an understanding of the research for development landscape.
  • Ability to synthesize and assess (sub) regional development challenges, to articulate, implement and lead a livestock research for development strategy.
  • Ability to build partnerships across ILRI Programmes, CGIAR Research Programmes, and Research support units and across the organisation.
  • Good written and oral communication skills to communicate to a broad and diverse audience.
Post location: The position is based in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Position level:The position is a principal scientist level, dependent on qualifications and experience.
Duration:3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
