The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks
to recruit a Crop Livestock Specialist to provide scientific and managerial
inputs to the Africa RISING project in support of the Project Manager. The main
focus of the work will revolve around a contribution to coordinating the
USAID-funded Africa RISING project as well as participating in establishing the
research activities of that project.
ILRI works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways
out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR
Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many
partners for a food-secure future. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa
and other hubs in East, West and southern Africa and South, Southeast and East
Asia.
CGIAR is a global agricultural research partnership for a
food-secure future. Its science is carried out by 15 research centres that are
members of the CGIAR Consortium in collaboration with hundreds of partner
organizations.
Responsibilities
- Establish
work plans and clarify partner responsibilities for implementing the
project’s ongoing research;
- Liaise
with CG and national partners to ensure that these plans are implemented
effectively and to time;
- Participate
in and deliver (as appropriate) partner trainings in the use of the tools
employed by the project;
- Participate
in the management of the field research including supervision of the site
coordinators;
- Plan
and implement, with partners, components of the on-farm, action research,
relevant to the post holders disciplinary specialisms;
- Contribute
to the preparation of reports required by USAID.
Requirements
- PhD
in livestock science or related field with a focus on smallholder
crop-livestock and pastoral systems in the developing world;
- At
least 2-4 years Post-doctoral relevant work experience;
- A
understanding of the concepts underlying intensification of mixed farming
systems in East Africa and elsewhere;
- Experience
of implementing innovative research for development;
- Good
written and oral communication skills;
- Good
project management skills;
- The
ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from a range
of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and with from different disciplinary
backgrounds;
- Good
publications record.
Position level: Scientist level 1 depending on
skills and experience.
Post location: The position will be based in
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal
contingent upon individual performance and funding.
