The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks
to recruit a Research Assistant IV – Legumes and Livestock in Smallholder
Systems who will be a member of the Animal Sciences for Sustainable
Productivity (ASSP) Program in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
ILRI works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways
out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR
Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many
partners for a food-secure future. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa
and other hubs in East, West and southern Africa and South, Southeast and East

The position: ILRI seeks to recruit a Research Assistant IV
– Legumes and Livestock in Smallholder Systems to support research on
prioritizing, testing and evaluating interventions in smallholder systems in
Ethiopia. The recruit’s core role will be to support the forthcoming project
LegumeCHOICE: Realizing the underexploited potential of multi-purpose legumes
towards improved livelihoods and a better environment in crop-livestock systems
in East & Central Africa. The job-holder will also provide support to other
projects as required including Africa RISING, CRP Humidtropics and CRP Water,
Land and Ecosystems.

Specific duties of the successful applicant will include:
- Leading
field application of tools developed during the project for
- Characterizing
current farming practices
- Targeting
legume interventions
- Developing
farmer typologies
- Analysing
trade-offs between alternative intervention strategies
- managing
and analysing data related to the above.
- Organizing
and facilitating stakeholder dialogues to develop a better understanding
of potential for incorporating multi-purpose legumes in smallholder
systems
- Preparing
written outputs relating to project activities.
- Organizing
field work logistics for scientists, post-docs and other research staff.
Skills and Competencies
- MSc.
in a relevant discipline, related to biophysical aspects of agricultural
systems.
- At
least 5 years of relevant experience in agricultural research in Ethiopian
highlands.
- Proven
ability to conduct participatory research tools effectively and manage the
data derived from application of such tools.
- Skills
and experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods and
analysis
- Research
communication skills or experience with communication and popularisation
of scientific outputs
- Collaborative
skills, ability to work in multi-cultural teams, excellent oral and
written communication skills (English)
- A
sense of creativity and ability to work with minimal supervision
Duty Station: Addis Ababa with some travel to other
project countries.
Grade: 2D
Minimum Base Salary: Birr 15,262
(Negotiable, depending on experience, skill and salary history of the
candidate)
Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited
Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is fixed term for two years with the
possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the
availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited
staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life
and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a
secure, attractive campus on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Dining and
sports facilities are located on site.
