The Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice is looking to
fill the following position: Programme Officer DRC/CAR (Full Time), based
in Kampala, Uganda,
with possible future relocation to Eastern DRC.
The Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice is an
international women’s human rights organisation that advocates for the
prosecution of gender-based crimes through the International Criminal Court
(ICC) and works with women most affected by armed conflict situations under
investigation by the ICC. The Women’s Initiatives (WI) currently has offices in
Cairo-Egypt, Kampala and Kitgum-Uganda and The Hague-The Netherlands.
Summary of Responsibilities:
The Programme Officer DRC/CAR will be responsible to
coordinate and grow the Women’s Initiatives country based programmes in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Central African Republic (CAR).
S/he will coordinate capacity and movement building initiatives; building our
partnerships particularly with conflict-based women’s rights and peace
activists in DRC and CAR; monitor implementation of peace talks and peace
initiatives in these countries. S/he will also liaise with women’s rights and
justice organisations in Côte d’Ivoire and Mali. In collaboration with the WI
Kitgum based Uganda Programme Officer, set up a new WI office in Kampala, which
will be a hub office for WI programme and legal monitoring activities in the
region.
Essential Experience/skills: - Minimum 5 years
employment in the field of women’s human rights and gender equality or direct
involvement in the integration of gender issues in relevant fields e.g. public
health, humanitarian, emergency/crisis response, HIV and AIDS, the justice
and/or social sectors; - experience working at national and international
levels including working within I/NGO sector and grassroots organisations; -
strong analytical, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills; -
willingness and ability to travel frequently and work in insecure environments;
- minimum Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields such as Political Science,
Public Health, Law, Social Sciences or other relevant academic study; - fluency
in written and spoken English and French.
Desired Experience/skills: - Working knowledge of
Swahili; knowledge of other local languages from DRC or CAR; - awareness of and
commitment to the Rome Statute and the International Criminal Court;- good
knowledge of political and legal contexts of DRC and CAR and the Africa Great
Lakes Region; - direct experience in working with victims/survivors of sexual
and gender-based crimes.
