Alumni Fellow, ACM Tanzania Program

Position: Alumni Fellow
Location: ACM Tanzania Program — Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Deadline: April 1, 2014

The Associated Colleges of the Midwest seeks an Alumni Fellow for its Tanzania: Ecology & Human Origins program for the first seven weeks of the fall 2014 semester. The primary purpose of the Alumni Fellow position is to assist the ACM Faculty Director, with particular attention to helping program students familiarize themselves with Tanzania and enhancing their cultural immersion as well as supporting the early stages of the student research projects.

The Fellow will report to the Director and work closely with on-site staff including the Program Assistant and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Links Office. This is a temporary, non-renewable engagement, from the second week of August through the end of September with the option to extend to the middle of December pending enrollments, available duties, and a performance review.

Responsibilities of the position include:
  • Assist Faculty Director in planning for and implementing the students' arrival, orientation, and registration formalities during the first weeks of the program.

  • Serve as a positive role model for students' cultural immersion.
  • Plan activities to enhance students' ability to adapt to Tanzania in the first weeks of the program, in consultation with the Faculty Director, including the use of local transportation, shopping (and bargaining) etiquette, identification of local restaurants, introduction to the area around the UDSM campus, campus tour, life in the dorms, how to conduct oneself in the University setting, safety and security, and how to learn effectively from faculty in a different higher education culture.
  • Check-in daily with the faculty director and assist with weekly student meetings. Discuss any student-related issues that may arise with the Faculty Director.
  • Assist the Faculty Director and Program Assistant in arranging program excursions and events as requested and, when necessary, students' medical appointments.
  • Help to coordinate volunteer activities for students in Dar es Salaam.
  • Provide feedback and support on students' field research projects in Fellow's area of expertise.
  • Be available to students on a regular basis to facilitate their understanding and ability to adapt to program housing and academic arrangements.
  • Pre-departure projects including digitizing student projects and conducting one-on-one student phone calls.
Requirements for the position:
  • Alumnus/a of the ACM Tanzania Program.
  • B.A. degree completed.
  • A willingness to share the benefits of experience with program participants and to facilitate students' adaptation to Tanzania.
  • Availability to spend two days of training in Chicago between June 16-18, 2014.
Desired requirements:
  • Preferred academic disciplines include Anthropology, Archaeology, and Geology.
  • Graduate coursework or degree.
  • Teaching experience or teaching assistant experience with undergraduate or graduate students.
ACM will provide the following:
  • Round-trip economy class airfare from the individual's home to Dar es Salaam.
  • Travel, hotel, and meals for two days of training in Chicago.

  • Stipend of $1,000.
  • Health insurance coverage through ACM's international insurance provider.
  • Reimbursement of visa-related expenses.
  • Reimbursement of expenses related to program-related activities.
Application information:
To be considered for the position, applicants are asked to submit a cover letter, describing their experience with the ACM Tanzania program and how this experience allows them to help others to adapt to a semester in Tanzania, a recommendation letter, and a curriculum vitae.  Materials should be submitted in Word or PDF form to acm@acm.edu, with the subject line "Alumni Fellow, Tanzania."
