The Associated Colleges of the Midwest seeks an Alumni
Fellow for its Tanzania: Ecology & Human Origins program for the
first seven weeks of the fall 2014 semester. The primary purpose of the Alumni
Fellow position is to assist the ACM Faculty Director, with particular
attention to helping program students familiarize themselves with Tanzania and
enhancing their cultural immersion as well as supporting the early stages of
the student research projects.
The Fellow will report to the Director and work closely with
on-site staff including the Program Assistant and the University of Dar es
Salaam (UDSM) Links Office. This is a temporary, non-renewable engagement, from
the second week of August through the end of September with the option to
extend to the middle of December pending enrollments, available duties, and a
performance review.
Responsibilities of the position include:
- Assist
Faculty Director in planning for and implementing the students' arrival,
orientation, and registration formalities during the first weeks of the
program.
- Provide
students advice, information, and services designed to make their academic
and cultural experience in the ACM Tanzania Program — both in Dar es
Salaam and in the field — as productive as possible.
- Serve
as a positive role model for students' cultural immersion.
- Plan
activities to enhance students' ability to adapt to Tanzania in the first
weeks of the program, in consultation with the Faculty Director, including
the use of local transportation, shopping (and bargaining) etiquette,
identification of local restaurants, introduction to the area around the
UDSM campus, campus tour, life in the dorms, how to conduct oneself in the
University setting, safety and security, and how to learn effectively from
faculty in a different higher education culture.
- Check-in
daily with the faculty director and assist with weekly student meetings.
Discuss any student-related issues that may arise with the Faculty
Director.
- Assist
the Faculty Director and Program Assistant in arranging program excursions
and events as requested and, when necessary, students' medical
appointments.
- Help
to coordinate volunteer activities for students in Dar es Salaam.
- Provide
feedback and support on students' field research projects in Fellow's area
of expertise.
- Be
available to students on a regular basis to facilitate their understanding
and ability to adapt to program housing and academic arrangements.
- Pre-departure
projects including digitizing student projects and conducting one-on-one
student phone calls.
Requirements for the position:
- Alumnus/a
of the ACM Tanzania Program.
- B.A.
degree completed.
- A
willingness to share the benefits of experience with program participants
and to facilitate students' adaptation to Tanzania.
- Availability
to spend two days of training in Chicago between June 16-18, 2014.
Desired requirements:
- Preferred
academic disciplines include Anthropology, Archaeology, and Geology.
- Graduate
coursework or degree.
- Teaching
experience or teaching assistant experience with undergraduate or graduate
students.
ACM will provide the following:
- Round-trip
economy class airfare from the individual's home to Dar es Salaam.
- Travel,
hotel, and meals for two days of training in Chicago.
- Housing
in the UDSM dorms.
- Stipend
of $1,000.
- Health
insurance coverage through ACM's international insurance provider.
- Reimbursement
of visa-related expenses.
- Reimbursement
of expenses related to program-related activities.
