Communications & Beneficiary Accountability Officer


Be a vital information link between beneficiaries and Medair's target audiences. Support marketing and relationships at HQ by providing and facilitating relevant and timely information for Medair’s communication and fundraising activities. Lead and advise the field teams in dealing with external communication, monitors visibility in the field. Champion beneficiary accountability within the organisation and works with programme staff to ensure that beneficiary feedback is taken into account at all stages of project design and implementation. Work closely with the M&E Officer in gathering information to monitor project implementation and in providing training to Medair staff to improve our beneficiary accountability.

Project Overview
Emergency health projects targeting displaced, war affected and vulnerable populations in NE Congo. WASH interventions in health centres and as part of a health emergency response. Developmental-type projects aimed at long term and sustainable behaviour change in general population and state health employees to improve public health outcomes.

Key Activity Areas
Marketing and Relationships Resources
  • In order to support Medair’s marketing and relationships strategy, plans and activities, travel frequently to field projects to pro-actively and re-actively gather and pitch resources and updates on programmes and projects.
  • Support the HQ Communications Resources Officer by gathering, preparing and adapting marketing and relationships material for input into the HQ M&R document mgt software and online photo database.
  • Provide update reports on programmes and projects previously communicated about in campaigns, stories, fund appeals or private major donor proposals.
  • Prepare, facilitate and accompany field visits of photographers, journalists, or media crews.
Media and Public Relations
  • Be aware of and get information about local emergencies, surveys or topics of interest to the media.
  • Proactively liaise with local, regional, national and international media in the field.
Digital Social Media
  • Actively facilitate, produce, publish, and/or promote short content updates on Facebook and other social media such as Twitter.
  • Train and encourage field staff on the appropriate use of online social media.
Institutional Donors Relations
  • Regularly provide stories, photos, and communication reports as required by Medair’s donors.
Branding and Co-branding Coordination
  • Promote, review and audit, under the guidance of the Brand Manager, the design and application of Medair and, where applicable, institutional donor branding in all marking, visibility and field communication.
  • Advise Programme Managers upon institutional donor marking visibility budgets and conditions according to Medair and institutional donor guidelines.
Internal Communication
  • Assist field leadership team in developing tools and structures to pro-actively support the team in improving internal communication within the programme, e.g. internal news, contributing to team meetings, prayer reports, etc.
  • Distribute the Annual Report, newsletters and other communication material among staff and external contacts.
Beneficiary Accountability
  • Responsible for periodically reviewing and updating the beneficiary accountability plan.
  • Advise on existing mechanisms for gathering beneficiary feedback and communicating this to the wider Medair team.
  • Work with the relevant Manager(s) to ensure the integration of beneficiary participation and accountability in programme design and implementation/ activities.
  • Act as focus point for HAP-I for the country programme, promoting its principles and advising on actions among all managers.
  • Provide regular updates to the CD and DCD(P) on beneficiary feedback and accountability issues raised.
  • Write the BA annual activity report.

Qualifications
  • Professional qualification in Communications / Fundraising / PR / Media or a related field

Languages
  • Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written)
  • Strong working knowledge of French (spoken and written)
  • Ability to speak, or willingness to learn, local language

Experience / Competencies
  • Professional experience in media / communications or private fundraising
  • Experience in beneficiary accountability desirable
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to target different audiences and to tailor output accordingly
  • Competent with photo-editing software desirable; keen to share information and provide training
  • Ability to relate well with many kinds of people, and to establish rapport and trust
  • Outgoing but also diplomatic; good listener; committed to consultative and servant-minded leadership

  • Working knowledge of French, spoken and written, for French-speaking field programmes

  • Successful completion of Medair Relief & Recovery Orientation Course (ROC)
