FHI 360 serves more than 60 countries, all 50 U.S. states and all U.S. territories. We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Technical Advisor I, WASH – Nutrition Behavior Change Specialist in Mali.

Program Description
USAID/Mali is supporting a cooperative agreement to improve the nutritional status of women and children under two years of age by implementing a program that integrates water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and nutrition. CARE is leading an effort to respond to this program with partners FHI 360 and International Rescue Committee. FHI 360 is leading the behavior change component and is seeking a specialist to lead this effort with support from FHI 360 in Washington DC.


Job Responsibilities:
  • Lead the behavior change component of the Mali Integrated Rural Program in Nutrition and Hygiene.
  • Develop a behavior change strategy using research results from FHI 360 PROFILES and CARE’s Social Analysis and Action Research (SAAR) that incorporates an “integrated package” of nutrition, WASH and gender strategies and actions for program implementation.
  • Work with CARE, IRC and FHI 360 programs in select sites, and USAID implementing partners, other donor programs, NGOs, CBOs, to integrate WASH and nutrition into agriculture and livelihood activities. Identify opportunities and gaps for WASH-focused programming, and programmatic responses to meet the need.
  • Develop/adapt, organize and oversee capacity-building activities for local government and USAID implementing partners to implement the “integrated package” of effective nutrition, WASH and gender behavior change activities.
  • Work with key stakeholders in such strategic activities as coordination, policy meetings, technical working groups, using these fora to advocate for the “integrated (minimum) package” of nutrition, WASH, gender actions.
  • Identify and work with USAID implementing partners, NGOs, CBOs, communities, etc. to produce or adapt related job aids or promotional materials related to WASH-nutrition integration.
  • Work with partners to explore the feasibility of developing a consumer products such as a commercial handwashing device to facilitate household handwashing. If feasible, work to develop and test appropriate products using consumer marketing approaches.
  • Assist in monitoring and supporting the progress of behavior change activities in Mali.
  • Assist in documenting experiences, preparing reports, etc.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in one of the following or related fields: public health, environmental health, nutrition, adult education, health promotion or other related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience working with government, PVOs and NGOs.
  • Previous experience working with international organizations required history with USAID-funded initiatives desirable.
  • Solid mastery of health behavior change theory grounded in applied field applications; experience and ability to design and manage comprehensive WASH and nutrition behavior change initiatives that are based on identification of influential behavioral determinants of WASH and nutrition behaviors for priority audiences.
  • Designs must incorporate a comprehensive suite of activities to stimulate the consistent and correct practice of WASH and nutrition behaviors, bearing in mind that materials, training and communication are just a few of many tools for changing WASH behaviors; assuring access to key products and services; a supportive policy environment and social norms necessary tools for consistent and correct practice of WASH and nutrition behaviors.
  • Knowledge and experience with WASH technologies and approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience in building capacity of government and CBO cadres
  • Knowledge and experience in designing and implementing evidence-based behavior change approaches, particularly approaches incorporating the role of products, social factors and environment in facilitating change.
  • Understanding of key nutrition concepts, and the role of safe water, food hygiene, sanitation and hand washing in nutrition.
  • Strategic thinker, strong team player, able to deliver results without close supervision.
  • Experience managing public- private partnerships, social marketing and/or product development desirable.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and French.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, internet applications required.
  • Host country nationals preferred
